Trace Elements in Fish and Fish Oil Supplements

چکیده
For years, the American Heart Association has recommended eating an average of two to three fishmeals each week to help reduce cholesterol, high blood pressure, and hardening of arteries. Research shows that consuming fish increases high quality protein with fewer calories, and it is rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acid helps to reduce the risk of coronary artery disease, helps in the treatment of bipolar disorder/depression, and helps reduce inflammation in autoimmune diseases (1,4). Fish are also low in sodium and a good source of potassium. Some examples of fatty, coldwater fish that are high in omega-3 fatty acids include salmon, mackerel, and herring. Unfortunately, due to industrial pollution, many fish have high levels of contaminants including mercury, methyl mercury, and PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), which are absorbed by surrounding waters and from foods they eat. Currently, the EPA limit for mercury in fish is 1 ppm. About 22% of all PCBs are in estuarine and coastal sediments, which accounts for 95% of the fish production (2). The EPA estimates up to 15% of mercury emissions from these utilities fall within 30 miles of a plant, and up to 50% falls within six hundred miles. The mercury bio-accumulates through the food chain and reaches the predator species. For example, a Nevada reservoir fish tissue sample shows an average of 0.47 ppm mercury; the EPA guidelines recommend limiting consumption of such fish to one 8-ounce meal per month for adults (3). For humans, mercury and methyl mercury are toxic and can damage the brain and the nervous system. Mercury poisoning symptoms include numbness in hands and feet, general muscle weakness, and vision, hearing, and speech damage. In extreme cases, insanity, paralysis, coma, and death follow. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the EPA advised pregnant women and those who might become pregnant to avoid certain fish known to be high in mercury. This study will investigate trace element concentrations including heavy metal concentrations in different types of fish and fish oil supplements available from local markets in New Jersey.

Estimation of Polychlorinated Biphenyls Intake through Fish Oil-Derived Dietary Supplements and Prescription Drugs in the Japanese Population
Background: Oily fish and their extracted oils may be a source of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) which can induce toxic effects on the consumers. The main aim of this survey was estimation of PCBs intake through fish oil-derived dietary supplements and prescription drugs in the Japanese population. Methods: PCBs levels were determined in 20 fish oil-derived dietary supplements and 6 oil-deri...
متن کاملConcentrations of Some Trace Metals in the Tissues of Two Commercial Fishes from Tonekabon
In this study, concentrations of mercury (Hg) and 16 other elements as well as methylmercury speciation were quantified in muscle and liver of two commercial fish species. It was also our intention to evaluate potential risks to human health associated with seafood consumption. The fish species, Mullet and Kutum (Caspian White fish) fishes, were obtained from Tonekabon at the Iranian waters of ...
متن کاملEffect of several dermatitis preventing agents on foot pad dermatitis in dwarf and normal sized single comb white Leghorn layers.
Studies were conducted to determine the effects of increased dietary levels of vitamin and trace mineral mixtures, methionine, meat and bone meal, fish meal, and safflower oil on foot pad dermatitis in dwarf and normal size Single Comb White Leghorn layers. All layers were maintained in individual wire cages throughout a 40-week experiment period. Individual birds were scored for the incidence ...
متن کاملEffect of aerobic exercise and fish oil supplements on plasma levels of inflammatory indexes in mice
Background: Exercise has positive and negative effects on immune system. Herein, we would like to investigate the effects of incremental aerobic training and fish oil supplementation on the plasma levels of CRP, CPK and IL-17 in trained mice. One of the major roles of immune system is to produce soluble or cellular components that provide the immunity against inflammatory agent. The purpo...
متن کاملBoron and fish oil have different beneficial effects on strength and trabecular microarchitecture of bone.
An experiment was performed to determine whether boron deprivation would adversely affect vertebra (trabecular) bone microarchitecture, and whether any adverse effect would be modified by dietary fatty acid composition. Female rats were fed diets containing 0.1mg (9 micromol) boron/kg in a factorial arrangement with variables of supplemental boron at 0 (boron-deprived) or 3 (boron-adequate) mg ...
متن کاملIdentification of unresolved complex mixtures (UCMs) of hydrocarbons in commercial fish oil supplements.
BACKGROUND Heightened awareness of the health benefits of fish oil consumption has led to a great increase in the number of fish oil supplements available to the consumer. Therefore manufacturers are continually looking for ways to distinguish their products from those of competitors. Minimally refined or virgin fish oils provide a unique feature; however, petroleum hydrocarbon contamination fr...
